Parallel Activation 4: ELECTIONS: Empowering Communities for Continuous Civic Engagement: Beyond the Ballot Box (OCL)

October 18, 2023 @ 11:00 am - 12:30 pm

Venue: Courtyard Boardroom

Session Format: Activation

Host: Open Cities Lab (OCL)

Speaker: Ella Alcock

Session Overview

While voting at election time is important, it’s equally vital to sustain civic participation beyond elections to drive lasting positive change, so how do we empower individuals to actively engage with their elected representatives, beyond the ballot box?

In this activation session, we will briefly introduce MyCandidate, a platform used during elections to provide users with comprehensive information about candidates. Building upon this, we will explore the vision of MyCouncillor as a tool for continuous civic engagement. Through engaging discussions and activities, we will address key questions such as how to monitor councillor achievements, the best methods for engagement with leadership and participation in the public process, desired features of the platform, and effective strategies for transitioning from MyCandidate to MyCouncillor. This transition bridges the gap between election cycles, offering a continuous avenue for citizens to hold representatives accountable, advocate for their needs, and contribute to their community’s development.

Join our collaborative space to shape the future of community-driven governance.

 Session Objectives

The goal of this session is to explore how technology can be used to empower communities in their engagement with elected representatives beyond election periods. We aim to spark discussions and ideation around the concept of MyCouncillor, an app/site that enables citizens to communicate with and hold their elected representatives accountable. By collectively brainstorming and exchanging ideas, we seek to uncover strategies for effective transition from MyCandidate to MyCouncillor, ensuring citizens have a voice and a means to influence local governance.
