Initiative Description
Debunk Media Initiative is Uganda’s first fact-checking organisation and show series using multimedia projects to spread facts across different regions in Uganda. Today, Debunk Media Initiative serves facts through different partnerships/collaborations to create a world where people access factual information in real-time for them to make informed decisions.
Their vision is to create a world where people access factual information in real-time to make informed decisions and their mission is to build an entity that is enhancing the capacity and competence of the media, youths, leaders and communities to address the challenge of dis/misinformation in Uganda. They provide video fact checks / Podcast/ Fact Cards that include detailed weekly factual information from several mis/disinformation shared across the globe and in Uganda. They train journalists, organisations, fact checking enthusiasts to understand the art of fact-checking and how to thrive with fact-checking programs/ initiatives. The organisation has the Debunk bot that is a WhatsApp number added to contacts and can be messaged, sending voice recordings and videos for debunking. The bot has fact-checkers on the back end working 24/7 to respond to queries and ask experts for further research. Debunk Media Initiative also works with radio stations to translate fact checks into several local languages to cover a wider base and build a fact-checking culture.
