On 01 October 2019, a Municipal Finance Data Storytelling workshop was held at Tshisimani Centre for Activists in Mowbray, Cape Town and on 05 November 2019, a Municipal Finance Data Storytelling workshop was held at Tshimologong in Braamfontein by the SA Cities Network.

The aim of the event was to facilitate the engagement of a varied audience with data from the South African Cities Network State of City Finances 2018 and have a conversation about data, accountability and transparency. The attendees consisted of civil society organisations advocating for good governance, and greater accountability and transparency in the use of public funds at local level; civic technologists, data scientists and programmers; the managers of public sector financial data portals, and communicators/journalists/storytellers.
Event attendees participated in a short, structured process intended to create awareness of municipal financial data in South Africa.

The engagement covered the entire research journey, from formulating a question to discovery, and analysis and insight. The intended outcome of the workshop was that participants from these different groups are aware of online sources of municipal data (National Treasury MunicipalMoney website); metro data (SCODA website) and how this data can be explored and analysed. Participants developed an understanding of city budgeting and finances, and the impact of municipal finances on urban livelihoods.

Asanda Ngoasheng is an education change agent and diversity trainer for schools, universities, and corporates. As an academic, she is one of the leading voices on the #DecolonisingtheCurriculum movement of #FeesMustFall. She has written and published academic journal articles, book chapters and opinion pieces on race and the politics of identity with a focus on social justice curriculum development for schools and universities. She has taught at the University of Witwatersrand and Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT). She is currently a Research Associate at the Centre for Rights and Justice at the University of Sussex.

Prior to founding Open Cities Lab, Richard worked as an economist, based in Durban, South Africa, for eight years where he interacted with both private clients and all tiers of South African government on a range of projects in various sectors.
