OPEN DATA DAY 2020 - WOMEN AND HEALTH IN KWAZULU NATAL
PAN, the HSRC, Innovate Durban, OpenDataZA, Smartipants Technologies, VarsityGenie and partners hosted two, one-day ‘Easter Egg Hunt’ data workshops in two cities in KZN. The workshops followed an ‘Easter Egg Hunt’ format in which participants were provided with a series of questions about civic or social issues along with pointers to relevant data in which they ‘hunt’ for answers.
Background
International Open Data Day1 is an annual celebration of open data all over the world. For the tenth time, groups from around the world curated local events on the day where they used open data in their communities. It was an opportunity to show the benefits of open data and encourage the adoption of open data policies in government, business and civil society.
In South Africa, most data-related events take place in Gauteng and the Western Cape so Open Data Day was an opportunity to host activities in another province, in this case KZN, and to explore potential use cases related to open data that can benefit citizens and support public policy decision-making in the region.
