The event proposes to bring together coders who are part of the Codebridge Community with Civil Society Organisations who are seeking tech solutions. There is a community of coders who have been meeting every second Thursday evening at Codebridge for several years already and who essentially work on civic tech projects that they voluntarily contribute to in their spare time.

This group is always looking for new NGO projects (which they battle to find) and are keen to learn more about the work of the NGOs as it helps them to create user-responsive solutions. The event will, therefore, have NGOs providing inputs at the beginning of the day about how their work relates to promoting the realisation of human rights and what kind of tech solutions they are seeking. During the day, there will be curated teams hacking on the different NGO projects. Some are already well underway and close to completion.

The new projects will be sustainable because they will be continued at the Codebridge Community if not completed. It is rare to complete a project at a Hackathon, therefore ensuring the sustainability of projects is important. A benefit of the hackathons and coding community is that people come to advance their skills alongside those who already have that professional competency, so there is also the informal transfer of skills that happens.

Paul is Co-founder and Programming Task Force Leader at the Metabolism of Cities.
He has helped this initiative grow from a side project into an open source platform run by a global network of collaborators who organize events, develop tools, and share knowledge around urban metabolism.
