SUMMARY:Digital Dialogues: Protecting minority groups from digital targeting
DESCRIPTION:With all users of mobile phones and the internet leaving behind their digital traces\, targeting becomes easy. In fact\, the business models of major online platforms and tech companies are based on targeting: algorithms follow individuals and sent them ads\, news reels\, and other digital products. \nHowever\, certain social groups\, such as the LGTBQ+ community\, women and other activists\, are being targeted for offline persecution and abuse. Earlier this year a coalition of NGOs headed by HRW demanded from META to make social media safe for everyone. This followed a report on how security forces in middle-eastern countries are using digital targeting which might lead to far-reaching offline consequences for LGBTQ+ individuals\, such as arbitrary detention and even torture. In the same geographical area\, Israel has added a digital component to its occupation of Palestinian lands and its people. There and elsewhere\, Governments have purchased specific spyware services to target journalists\, human rights defenders\, and other activists \nIt is clearly the responsibility of Governments to protect all citizens from harm and abuse\, whether offline or online. However\, the role of civil society organisations is often indispensable to ensure that digital targeting is exposed and fought against. Join the Digital Dialogue and get inspired by our thought-provoking panel\, representing civil society actors both in the global North sas well as the global South. The Digital Dialogue event series is jointly organized since 2022 by CvicTech Africa (CTIN) in Johannesburg and the ICS Centre in Berlin.
