Equally\, philanthropic organisations play an important role in funding the continuation of this work. The relationship between innovators who need funding (fundees) and philanthropic organisations who are in the business of funding innovators in the civic tech and media space (funders) is constantly evolving and adapting to new opportunities\, risks and challenges in the space.  The fundees pool is saturated with similar initiatives vying for the same funders. This presents a challenge for initiatives wanting to do sustainable work particularly because of the lack of guarantees about future funding. Future funding mostly depends on funders staying the course\, funders believing and seeing value in the work being done\, and consistency in their strategic direction. When these factors change\, fundees find themselves in difficult positions.  \nThe overreliance on these limited groups of funders has led to some important discussions about the viability of these lop-sided funder-fundee relationships. African civic tech organisations have begun talking about alternative ways to sustain and scale the work they do. Reports like the ‘Growing and Sustaining African Civic Tech’ have provided some new ways of thinking about funding in the civic tech and media innovation landscape. This discussion will provide another opportunity to dig deep and explore alternative pathways to sustainable financing.

Hadassah Myers (UJ) and Sabeehah Motala (GIZ TIP) will describe a creative project that developed from conversations about the role of technology in anti-corruption initiatives within a South African context. Innovation in this space is still fresh and often driven by the limited experiences from other (usually Global North) countries. A design project was re-imagined based on the premise that new channels need to form to wash away old failed ways of thinking about the future. Over the last semester\, the 2023 cohort of final-year Digital Media Design students have been participating in this new project that aims to evoke discussion about technology and the future of transparency\, integrity\, and transformation. The framework for the project was created using a combination of Speculative Futures and Futures Literacy Design Approaches. Students have been encouraged to look beyond “used” futures and think about corruption from an imaginative and decolonised perspective. \nThe session hopes to: \n\nStart a conversation about the benefits of collaboration and creativity in presenting new ways of thinking about corruption\, technology\, agency\, and the future.  \nShare insights gained in the development and progression of the project.\n Showcase examples that illustrate the potential of this approach

Building upon this\, we will explore the vision of MyCouncillor as a tool for continuous civic engagement. Through engaging discussions and activities\, we will address key questions such as how to monitor councillor achievements\, the best methods for engagement with leadership and participation in the public process\, desired features of the platform\, and effective strategies for transitioning from MyCandidate to MyCouncillor. This transition bridges the gap between election cycles\, offering a continuous avenue for citizens to hold representatives accountable\, advocate for their needs\, and contribute to their community’s development. \nJoin our collaborative space to shape the future of community-driven governance. \n Session Objectives  \nThe goal of this session is to explore how technology can be used to empower communities in their engagement with elected representatives beyond election periods. Radio has been active for 100 years in South Africa but in other parts of Africa\, it has existed prior. Panellist will share the history of the medium in the different regions of the continent i.e.\, Southern\, Eastern and Western. They will discuss the role radio plays in nation-building\, reaching/communicating with rural communities and bringing peace in conflict-stricken regions across Africa.

In African democracies\, the increasing corruption rate\, influence and scale is a significant challenge. Digital tools\, applications and movements have emerged as a response to counter corruption through proactive methods and technologies. Civic technology raises accountability and transparency through online services\, transparency or open data portals\, information crowdsourcing\, online corruption reporting\, service automation\, and digitalisation.  \nThe session will discuss the ways in which digital innovations and civic tech tools/ methodologies are helping to proactively meet the challenge of corruption at various levels of state governance. Panellists will share experiences and insights on the use\, value and application of emerging technologies\, including AI (and other) tools\, processes and methodologies that support democracy building and citizen engagement\, while also supporting more transparent and accountable governance systems\, processes and outcomes. The session will demonstrate the power of collaboration and collective action\, specifically highlighting the significance of collaboration between governments\, civil society\, and the private sector in curbing corruption. We’ll explore how digital tools facilitate cross-sector partnerships for effective solutions.
