SUMMARY:Parallel Workshop 1: METHODOLOGIES: AI & Co Design
DESCRIPTION:Venue: Courtyard Boardroom \nSession Format: Workshop \nSpeakers: \n\nAngella Ndaka \n\nSession Overview: \nIn this session\, we shall walk through the journey of collaborative designing(co-design) of AI and other emerging technologies in the African context. The session will draw from my PhD research and other studies to unveil ontological politics that exist within and between spaces that shape AI sociotechnical systems\, the barriers they create to the inclusive design of AI technologies and how these barriers can be navigated through intentional\, reflexive and practical steps of collaborating with different entities. This entails going beyond disciplinary boundaries to create solutions that produce better possibilities for humanity and nature. \nSession Objectives: \n\nThe session will engage the participants to co-imagine co-design of AI\nShare research findings and examples of how situated the knowledge that shapes AI are.\nSuggest practical ways of enhancing collaborative designing that produce greater solutions fro everyone.\n\nSession Audience: \nTechnology design teams\, tech companies and start-ups\, researchers\, greater publics.

The discussion will be framed from the lens of civil society organisations both in the civic tech and media industries.  \nProposed Format: \nThis session is envisaged to include an opening plenary which sets the stage and shares some common information about the sub-theme\, as it links to the #AfricaFlows conference theme. We then go into an AI World Cafe format\, where participants will be broken into groups and will be allocated 20-30 minutes to spend at various stations. At these stations will be hosts who are encouraged to give a short (5-7) min presentation/talk on their initiative/application/case study/prototype\, followed by audience engagement (including a Q&A).

SUMMARY:#AfricaFlows Opening Plenary - The Influence of AI on Media and Governance in Africa
DESCRIPTION:Session Details  \nVenue: iClub \nSession Format: Panel Discussion \nHost: CTIN & Jamlab Africa \n  \nMC: Bongiwe Zwane\, SABC  \nWelcome Address: Lesley Donna Williams\, CEO: Tshimologong \nOpening Address: Prof Lynn Morris: Wits University Deputy Vice-Chancellor (VC) \nPanel Moderator: Prof. Geci Karuri-Sebina\, Organiser\, CTIN & Tayarisha Centre\, Wits School of Governance \nPanel Speakers: \n\nSbu Ngalwa\, Chairperson: South African National Editors’ Forum (SANEF)\nDr. Bosun Tijani\, Minister of Communications\, Innovation\, and Digital Economy\, Nigeria\nDr. Towela Nyere-Jere\, AUDA-NEPAD\n\n  \nSession Overview: \nMost recently\, Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become a contentious topic\, with some actors supporting and defending its role\, while other actors remain sceptical\, cautious and threatened. The concept of AI is not new – but the way AI is rapidly advancing and evolving indicates that the very nature of our work and home lives (including how democracies and governance processes function) will be re-orientated\, some even believe revolutionized. It is an open question how this shift will affect Africa as a continent that faces many challenges including rapid urbanisation\, high unemployment levels\, compromised education standards\, increasing poverty and inequality\, and generally lower economic growth prospects. These challenges are compounded by a lack of efficient governance\, transparency and accountability structures from which governments\, especially at the local level\, can improve citizens’ quality of life and secure collective human rights and democratic freedoms. \nSo\, how do we as civic tech and media innovators and practitioners seize this moment? We are living through the most significant technological revolution of the 21st century. How can we optimize our current work while finding ways to leverage AI as a tool to enhance our impact? What are our current approaches and how can we use our collective intelligence and expressions to integrate AI into our work approaches and strategies for the public good? \nThe Opening Plenary of CTIF23: #AfricaFlows will focus on the influence of AI on society\, media\, and governance in Africa. The session will explore specific questions about the various roles that AI is already playing in the civic tech and media ecosystems and discuss how governance in African countries can be improved through innovation\, adaptation\, preparedness\, resilience and action. The discussions will be proactive and set the tone for the conference programme to follow. This session will also critically reflect on the dangers\, risks and blind spots related to AI and its potential impact on African governance and various accountability mechanisms. We hope that bringing a balanced and nuanced approach to the topic will prompt reflective\, honest and open discussions.
